Aramis Ayala is a State attorney in Florida. She was the Democratic Party (United States) candidate for a Florida State Attorney position. She defeated Casey Anthony prosecutor Jeff Ashton in the 2016 primary, becoming Florida's first black state attorney. [3][14]  In 2017 she came into conflict with Governor Rick Scott and other officials over her decision not to seek the death penalty for Markeith Loyd who killed his pregnant girlfriend and a police officer.

On March 16 2017, Ayala announced that she would not seek the death penalty for convicted cop killer Markeith Loyd[7] Loyd killed his pregnant girlfriend as well as Lt. Debra Clayton. A second officer, Deputy Norm Lewis, was killed in a traffic collision during the manhunt for Loyd. [7]

 

Florida governor Rick Scott later used his executive power to remove Aramis from the case and reassign it to Brad King. [9]
