Big Wild Wings is an Alternative/Indie Rock three-piece from Salt Lake City, Utah. Since their meeting in the Spring of 2012, this band has been busy writing and gigging non-stop. “It’s hard to find a good trio these days who can encapsulate the feeling of a full band without gimmicks, especially anything where the band’s traditional lead guitarist has been replaced by anything not resembling a guitar… Big Wild Wings decided to buck the trends hard by combining a kickass drummer in Chris Soper with a master synth-player in Tyler Hummel, topping it off with the captivating Lyndsi Austin as their lead vocalist on bass [as well as cigar box guitar and harmonica]. Within the last year, the trio have become the alt/indie band to see in SLC…” (Gavin Sheehan, SLUG Magazine).
In July of 2014, Big Wild Wings began recording their first full-length album in Salt Lake City at Rocket Skates Recording with Brian Crabtree. Their single Someday Dreams was released on the 27th of October, 2014, and received airplay on KRCL 90.9 FM as well as K-UTE Radio. The release of their full-length debut album Speaking In Cursive followed shortly after on November 1st. The album has been greeted with an overwhelming amount of support, and was chosen as a staff pick for SLUG Magazine’s Top 5 Albums of 2014.
“This album feels like a genuine sugary treat in a year surrounded by gristle-like metal and hardcore releases, meshing an ‘80s quality synth- pop sound with a ‘90s-empowered tone and lyrics to create a downplayed kind of electro-rock. Austin’s vocals seal the deal, evoking emotion from the simplest of octaves that will cause you to ponder past memories while swaying to the beat. Over the years, Utah’s alternative scene has periodically gone from dominant to nonexistent in a matter of months, and while 2014 held some pretty decent works from newcomers, Speaking In Cursive is by far the standout album of the genre, released just as the year started coming to a close” (Gavin Sheehan - SLUG Magazine).
On January 6, 2015, Big Wild Wings appeared on KUER’s Radio West with Doug Fabrizio (NPR), which included live in-studio performances of multiple songs from their album. The interview was aired multiple times throughout the week, and podcasted on RadioWest.KUER.org (where you can still hear it). On February 4, 2015, KSL.com featured Big Wild Wings as a local artist on their main page, which included an interview and live video of “Someday Dreams” filmed at the KSL Broadcasting Center. In the same week, Salt Lake City Weekly spotlighted Big Wild Wings as one of the Top 10 Best Bands in Utah for 2015, where they were ranked in the Top 5 by fans.
The Salt Lake City radio station X96 (96.3 FM) will be showcasing Big Wild Wings as the featured artist for their Live & Local Spotlight in June of 2015, where Speaking In Cursive will be aired and promoted online for the entire month. During this time, the band will also embark on a full-length Western U.S. tour.
