Athens, Georgia Bluegrass/Folk band, Blackwater Deep, is now booking shows for the spring and summer of 2016. A sampling of their music is available on their Bandcamp page, here.
Like a slow river meandering through the southern swamps, Blackwater Deep is a band tinged and shaded by the land through which it flows. The twang of the Appalachians, the blues and soul of the piedmont, and the college town indie-scene all lend their colors to the band’s musical waters. The sound you hear echoing through the cypress knees and spanish moss is both familiar and strikingly fresh; hillbilly and sophisticated; down-home and far-out. Rooted in folk-rock and bluegrass, their original songs feature tight vocal harmonies, dynamic arrangements, and lyrics running the gamut from reflections on small town life to impressionistic story songs exploring southern gothic themes.
Blackwater Deep formed in Athens, Georgia in the fall of 2015 as a collaboration between songwriter and banjo player, Andrew Payne; guitarist, Will James; bassist, Aaron Kang; and drummer, Matt Petty. They have since built a reputation for their musicianship and energetic performances through playing shows at various South Carolina and Georgia venues.
