Brett Cohen is a singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer from Southern California who began his professional career in 1994 at the age of 14. He performs live over 350 times per year both as the front man of The Brett Cohen Band, as a solo artist, as well as playing as a side man for other musicians and bands. He specializes in guitar and bass, but he also does gigs as a vocalist, drummer, percussionist, mandolin player, and banjo player. He is an absolute work-aholic that you can find at your favorite local club one night, then the next night 2,000 miles away playing at a packed concert hall for thousands of fans.
In 2010 Brett released a hard rock album with the band Failing Sun (Rhombus Records) which he performed on, as well as Co-Produced, and composed the majority of the music. The album, entitled VOID, was recorded partially at his own studio, and partially at Scott Weiland and Doug Grean’s Lavish Studios in Burbank. It was considered for a Grammy nomination for that year’s Best Alternative Album.
Deciding to take his music in a different direction, Brett went on to form The Brett Cohen Band. Their debut album, BIG LOVE (Musik and Film, UMG), was released in 2012 and was a tour de force of guitar-based blues/rock reminiscent of The Allman Brothers, Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix, ZZ Top, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The album gained him some notoriety in the blues community, and one of his singles, I JUST WANT TO GET YOU HOME, crossed over to country and rock radio, and was put into rotation on over 250 radio stations world-wide. This album featured original compositions primarily written by Brett, and was also co-produced by Brett.
Brett’s new singles, and forth coming album, however have taken him in a different direction. The songs he has written in the last year have veered away from the heavy blues rock he’s known for to a place where blues, folk, Americana, country, indie rock, and pop influences all converge. While the prior mentioned influences are still present, so are influences from acts such as Counting Crows, John Mayer, The Hold Steady, and Wilco. While still a lover of the blues, Brett wanted to work on music that incorporated more aspects of his musical tastes, and while his lead guitar playing is still prominent, the focus of this album is on the songwriting first.
His first new single entitled, WHERE I’M SUPPOSED TO BE, is a Southern Blues and Jazz influenced Pop/Folk song about Brett’s first experience in New York. The second new single entitled, THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED is a mellower, but emotional, song that falls somewhere between The Allman Brothers Band and John Mayer in the music spectrum and deals with ending a relationship of co-dependence and indecisiveness. Both of these songs will be featured as part of his new full length recording, WOOD AND ELECTRICTY. The album will be released independently in the Spring of 2014. [+]
