Jim Sampson, Steev Rehn, Marie Santelices, Kelly Foley
It was June 1984. Kelly (vocals), Marie (keyboards), Steev (bass guitar), Jim (lead guitar) and Thom (drums) shared an interest in “new” rock, a passion for making music together, and distaste for the ordinary. Like most bands, Broken Toys began life as a cover band holding its first rehearsal in the basement of the Alpha Kappa Phi Archania fraternity on the campus of the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California.
That first summer saw Broken Toys prepare a set of cover songs that would ultimately change the musical landscape of California’s Central Valley while pushing Broken Toys to the forefront of the local scene through the end of the 1980s.
In the mid-80s, one had to travel to L.A. or San Francisco to hear this “new” music of the heroes of the day; INXS, Billy Idol, Simple Minds, Ultravox, Berlin, Echo & the Bunnymen, U2, the Cure, Joy Division, and Psychedelic Furs live, and Broken Toys was more than happy to fill that void in the San Joaquin Valley. Having struck a nerve, they played often, tapping into an unfilled demand for this new music.
Sometime during the summer of 1985, they turned their attention to writing original music. It was an obvious move as they yearned for new challenges having all but conquered the cover band scene. And while they continued to play their cover set for whoever wanted them, their focus became writing and recording their own original music. The newfound creative process served to re-energize the band. The recording sessions that would become "The Cut of Memory" began in early 1987 at Studio C in Stockton..
"The Cut of Memory" was a huge victory for the band in many ways, but it couldn’t keep them together forever. Three short years after its release, on New Year’s Eve 1989/1990, Broken Toys played its last proper show. By the time it was all over, they had played nearly 600 shows, and made many friends and memories in the process.
Now, 25 years after its original release Broken Toys are proud to present the 25th Anniversary Edition of "The Cut of Memory", re-mastered, including previously unreleased tracks, pictures, and more history and background to the songs from the original members themselves. Visit their Facebook page for information on release date and tickets and info for the upcoming reunion concert December 1st, 2012 at the Empire Theatre in Stockton on the historic Miracle Mile.
