An excellent example of Paso Robles’ dark, meaty Syrahs! The Calcarous 2008 Syrah comes from select blocks of the winery’s estate vineyard on the Westside of Paso Robles. These blocks are planted on what is the most exposed calcareous soil in the entire vineyard, on extremely steep hillsides nonetheless. Although very difficult to produce vines here, the extremely concentrated fruit produced from the site makes this a powerhouse Syrah and the truest expression of Calcareous Vineyard’s terroir. The San Diego International Wine Competition named the 2008 Syrah the WINE OF THE YEAR and Wine Review Online awarded it an incredible 93 POINTS! Its deep aromas of plum and caramel dominate the nose while full bodied cream, mocha and bramble berry coat the palate. Vanilla and smoked bacon (from the French oak barrels) blend with the leathery fruit to create a long, spicy finish supported by luscious, soft tannins. This wine was built to last! Aged 26 months in oak. 95% Syrah, 5% Grenache. [+]
