At the very heart of Grits & Soul is the songwriting collaboration of Southern song crafters, Anna Kline and John Looney. Their sound is a fusion of down-to-earth Americana steeped in lonesome mountain bluegrass and drenched in Memphis soul. Whether performing as an acoustic duo or a full band, the Grits & Soul sound haunts you. Anna and John have a dynamic musical chemistry onstage and off, that can’t help but be felt through their heartfelt original songs & intricate harmonies.
Their majority of their debut CD, Flood Waters, was recorded at Compass Records in Nashville as part of The Porchlight Sessions documentary Kickstarter project. Released October 29, 2013, it features an all-star line-up including Jay Starling on dobro (Love Canon, Larry Keel, Keller Williams), Kyle Tuttle on banjo (Peter Rowan, Rebecca Frazier), Lyndsay Pruett on fiddle (Jon Stickley Trio), & Adam Chaffins (Matt Flinner) on upright bass.
Other friends who make an appearance on the album are Nicky Sanders of The Steep Canyon Rangers, Robert Greer of Town Mountain, & Amanda Anne Platt of The Honeycutters.
Grits & Soul was recently a featured showcase artist at the 2013 International Bluegrass Music Association’s World of Bluegrass week in Raleigh, performing in a series of showcases sponsored by Merlefest, Pinecastle Records, & The Mast Farm Inn.
The band also will be performing at MerleFest 2014.
From their hard-driving bluegrass tracks to the slow-burning bluesy ballads, Grits & Soul are a memorable musical team.
