Growing up with music, I have been inspired from a young age. I learned to play the piano when I was four years old, picking up the guitar around age eight. Daily sounds I would hear in the car and around the house would be that of Nanci Griffith, Alison Krauss, Anne and Pete Sibley, Kate Wolf, and countless others. Hearing live music has always been a popular activity in my family, and a welcoming cafe in my small hometown of Salida, CO was always the place to go for music and was the main place of many beginnings. I began performing music, fingerpicking guitar and singing acoustic songs by Nanci Griffith, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Kate Wolf, etc. in this music cafe and friends' living rooms. Around age nine or ten, my sister, who plays the fiddle, and I began performing together, playing a mixture of fiddle tunes and folk songs by some of our favorite artists. I am fifteen now, attending high school in my artistic Colorado town. My sister and I perform in venues, festivals, and house concerts around Colorado and have journeyed to Texas, New York, and California to share our music. This past spring we recorded our first CD, which features 17 songs by artists such as Gillian Welch, Bill Monroe, Bob Dylan, Aoife O'Donovan, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and others. We have been incredibly lucky to grow and attain more musical knowledge with the help of our musical coaches Heidi Clare of the Reeltime Travelers and Ron Thomason of Dry Branch Fire Squad. We feature one of Heidi's originals on our debut album. Recently I have been taking mandolin lessons from Grammy nominated legend Mike Compton.
For this single, I tried something slightly different than what I collaborate with my sister on. "Broken Now Flying" is my original song that features only my acoustic guitar accompanying my voice. In an emotional setting, I portray deep feelings from my personal experiences. [+]
