James Hodgkinson

James Hodgkinson (December 12, 1950 - June 14, 2017) was a home inspector and gardener from Belleville, Illinois.[3] On June 14, 2017, he opened fire at several Republican Party (United States) lawmakers practicing for the Congressional Baseball Game in Alexandria, Virginia.[8]

James' Facebook profile shows support for Bernie Sanders, FDR, and progressive causes while containing several posts that were hateful toward President Trump and his administration calling him a traitor among other insults.[11] [3] His favorite television programs include Last Week TonightDemocracy NowThe Rachel Maddow Show, Real Time with Bill Maher and The Daily Show.[3] James was a part of a number of left-leaning Facebook groups such as The Road To Hell Is Paved With Republicans, Join The Resistance Worldwide!!, Rachel Maddow For President 2020, The Democrats, etc.[3]

James volunteered for Bernie Sanders' Presidential Campaign. He viewed Hillary Clinton as Republican Lite and wanted Bernie to be the Green Party (US) candidate when he lost.[15]

Shooting of Congressmen in Alexandria, Virginia

practicing for the Congressional softball game in the Del Ray, Alexandria, VA neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia.[5] Around 7 am, Hodgkinson opened fire on the baseball field. Five people, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and two Capitol Hill Police Officers, were injured.[8] Scalise was shot in the hip.[8] Hodgkinson was also shot and died from his injuries. The weapon he used was an SKS and witnesses report hearing 50 gunshots. The duration of the incident was between 5-10 minutes.[8]  

 

Hodgkinson was shot to death by United States Capitol Police officers Crystal Griner and David Bailey. Griner and Bailey were both shot and wounded. [21]

Personal Life

James grew up in Belleville, Illinois and attended Belleville High School-West. He studied flight training at Southwestern Illinois College.[3] He is the former owner of JTH Construction and was a mold and air quality inspector.[14] His home inspection license expired in November 2016 and he did not renew it.[10] James has been described by his former lawyer as an irascible angry little man.[21]

 

Suzanne Hodgkinson was his wife and lived with her at their home in Belleville, Illinois. The Hodgkinsons raised several Foster children including one, Wanda Ashley Stock, who killed herself in 1996 at the age of 17 by dousing herself with gasoline and setting herself on fire after just several months with the Hodgkinsons. 

Criminal History

In 1993, James was charged with Driving under the influence and other traffic offenses and in 2006 he was charged with Battery (crime) for pulling his daughter's hair and assaulting her boyfriend during a fight with his daughter's friend. The friend, named Aimee Moreland, has said of Hodgkinson: “Do I think he’s capable (of the shooting)? Definitely. It sounds really awful, but I’m not surprised. Every interaction I’ve had I’ve thought ‘that guy’s crazy.'” [21][29]

 

He was not charged in 2006 because Moreland missed her court date.

Officers who were part of Rep. Steve Scalise's security detail returned fire, wounding the shooter. He later died from his injuries. [10] [5]
