Josh Hoke is of Midwestern origin, the son of a preacher man, a student of adventure and a singer of the soul. His lifelong travels brought him to his eventual home of Portland, Oregon, where he currently makes melodies that satisfy like sweet tea on a Sunday afternoon. With guitar in hand and more than a touch of soul, his voice invites you into a sacred, rustic space of tired hope where confident honesty acquainted with grief fervently sings into that guttural longing for good life and luster. He currently strives to write and perform songs that evoke raw emotion and feeling, heartbreak and yearning, fleeting contentment and love, and ultimately seeks to invite his listeners to connect with his heart and artistic voice through the music. Alone with his guitar or surrounded by fellow musical sojourners, his songs draw listeners to a simple, soul-stirring experience.
Josh carries with him a rich history of music with roots in folk, blues, country, and gospel. He invokes musical influences from Neil Young, Van Morrison, Jackson Browne and the singer-songwriters of mid-20th century America as well as the deep soul-infused tones of the likes of Otis Redding and Nina Simone. The result is a sound as gritty and fresh as the day you were born, and calming as a kindly breeze over fields of new mown hay on a warm summer night. He sings with a smooth, tempered tone that draws the listener into a rich musical journey.
