Oden's voice falls somewhere between Joni Mitchell and Carol King with phrasing reminiscent of Rickie Lee Jones. Laura's music is simultaneously fresh and nostalgic for the vocal delirium of female vocalists of the 70s. “Her debut CD has a Florence and the Machine character” says accompanist Kevin Worrell. The hands and ears of producer Evan Phillips of the Whipsaws and Easton Stagger Phillips has a lot to do with that.
Performing intermittently over the past 18 years, Laura reclaimed her guitar and her songwriting for good in 2010. Her debut CD was released at end of April 2013. Oden has recently expanded her repertoire into banjo, accordion and reawakened some of her piano roots. The variety and complexity of her music is both familiar and fresh.
It's not possible to mention the local music scene without invoking something near and dear to Oden's heart: The Anchorage Music Co-op. As the driving force behind the Music Co-op, Oden has capitalized on her organizational skills and her social butterfly nature to broaden local opportunities for musicians to gain experience and build their chops. The Music Co-op is in it's 2nd season and has provided some much needed stage time for lots of local musicians as they move their careers from one level to the next. This year programming broadened by expanding beyond the ten monthly Artist Showcases produced in 2012. 2013 brought two new venues to the Anchorage music scene, the Quonset hut at Fiori D'Italia and an Under 21 Open Mic at the Middle Way Cafe. The Anchorage Music Co-op has enjoyed wide community support including not just the eager audiences wanting to hear music in a high quality listening room, but also from some committed sponsors. Among them are: KNOR 106.1 has re-broadcast almost every live performance since the beginning, giving local artists much needed radio play time. KNBA 90.3 has hosted local musicians prior to every Artist Showcase on a program called Alaska Spotlight. As musicians develop their careers, experience with radio performances and unscripted interviews prove to be essential building blocks. Other collaborative partnerships include: Spenard Farmers Market, Que Pasa (Spirit Of Youth), Anchorage Folk Festival, Anchorage Film Forum and Underground Live.
Oden is already in the pre-stages of her next album. As this album becomes a part of the current local musical conversation, Laura looks forward to playing more and nurturing the next round of songs into an album ready state. [+]
