Malak Al Shehri

Malak Al Shehri is a Saudi Arabian woman who appears to be in her 20s.[1]

In December of 2016, Al Shehri posted a photo of herself on Twitter in Riyadh on a street called  al-Tahliya wearing without a hijab or abaya. Instead, she wore a jacket with a dress and boots with no headscarf, something that is illegal in Saudi Arabia. After receiving several complaints from citizens, the religious police arrested her.[1]

Many in the Saudi populace have called for her lashing and execution with several tweets saying that they should "Kill her and feed her to the dogs, "The least punishment for her is beheading her," and "We demand utmost punishment, for the state has rules that she did not respect."[2]

Al Shehri has also received support for her protest online commending her for her bravery and resilience.[2] She has drawn comparisons to Rosa Parks.[1]
