María Luisa Cánovas

María Luisa Cánovas focuses her practice on cross-border M&A, joint ventures, and other business transactions. She has extensive experience advising U.S. investors regarding investments in Latin America, where she has represented clients in a wide range of industries, including hospitality, media, real estate, and energy. She also has represented Spanish and Latin American clients in their investments in the U.S. Her clients include major multinational companies and individual investors as well as private investment funds, venture capital groups, and their portfolio companies.

María Luisa has assisted clients with financing alternatives and exit strategies enabling clients to monetize their investments and has implemented corporate workouts and restructurings. Prior to joining Jones Day she represented News Corporation in a series of transactions with DirecTV, Globo, Grupo Televisa, and Liberty Media that restructured, by means of divestitures, mergers, and liquidations, the platforms of DirecTV and News Corporation in Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Colombia. She also represented an international hospitality fund in the financing, development, and acquisition of hotels and resorts in Latin America for an aggregate value of more than $1 billion and represented the client in 11 acquisitions in Mexico and six in the Dominican Republic as well as drafted and negotiated the management agreements for the operation of the resorts.
