Oginalii, (meaning "my friend" in Cherokee) was conceived between two friends in Nashville, Tenn. As a fruition of successful songwriting endeavors. Oginalii is now a full, ever-changing band of collaborative and unique musical talents and styles, playing together to create what others call a native, folk-rock sound. The band’s founding members, Emma Hoeflinger and Karalyne Winegarner met when they shared a hall at Belmont University 4 years ago. The two have been writing together and collaborating with many other friends ever since.
Through their diverse array of influences and song styles, the girls have begun to compose something much more than just music; rather, a culture of fresh sounds and songwriting that really represents and reflects that New Nashville sound. The sound is anchored by the lead vocals of Emma Hoeflinger, whose range and tone is beyond comparison. With Robert Plant’s symbol tattooed on her arm, and the power of Aretha in her lungs, Emma Hoeflinger is much more than your average Nashville girl with a guitar. Karalyne Winegarner, who dances between keys and drums, provides a texture of harmonies that match Emma’s voice in a precise and enchanting way, to give the melodies that familiar Americana/ Folk harmony blend.
Birthed from the underground scene, this band got its start hashing out their chops in rock’n’roll house shows and Honky-Tonks alike. With an array of session players and featured artists and friends constantly sitting in on different performances, no one show is the same; yet, all are held together by the powerful songwriting and styles of Emma and Karalyne. Their album, set to release when they good and well feel like it, has been a year long process of bouncing between legendary studios like Ocean Way A, Quonset Hut A, Columbia A (formerly RCA) and even their own home studio. It is this quilt of Nashville friends and styles that gives Oginalii the sound of old and new, and it is going to be quite exciting to watch as Oginalii grows and shapes not only her music, but the culture that surrounds her.
