Sam Hawgood

Sam Hawgood is chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco. In his 32 years at UCSF, he has been dean of the School of Medicine, vice chancellor for medical affairs, chair of the department of pediatrics, physician-in-chief of the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, associate director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute, and president of the UCSF Medical Group, which represents more than 1,800 UCSF physicians. Under his leadership, the School of Medicine has become the top medical school in the nation in research funding from the National Institutes of Health, and also became the only U.S. medical school to rank in the top five in both research and primary care education, according to U.S. News & World Report rankings. Hawgood has maintained his own laboratory, which has been continuously supported by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine, part of the National Academy of Sciences. Hawgood received his M.D. from the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. [+]
