Cousins Christoph Manuel (vocals/guitar) and Stefan Reinberger (guitar/vocals) found life’s meaning growing up in Vienna, Austria trading off riffs from their favorite bands (like The Deftones, Nirvana & Silverchair). Countless treks to their local record store and the occasional thrill of concert tickets to see one of their heroes was not enough to feed their hunger, and their passion longed to orbit a music scene where they would be appreciated. “To say that we’re seriously pursuing music as a career would get us laughed at back home,“ recounts Christoph. It became clear that the only way was the highway.
Cue: a 4000 something mile move across the Atlantic to Brooklyn. “We knew the only way was to take that drastic step to make the music survive” explains Stefan. Shortly after arriving, the pair met renowned vocal coach Melissa Cross (The Zen of Screaming). “It wasn’t just their talent that struck me. There is talent everywhere, but their work ethic was uncanny! These kids work their asses off relentlessly - they’re not just wanking wannabes looking for a handout,” says Melissa.
The pair quickly met like-minded musicians hanging in the Williamsburg music scene, easily recruiting Jonathan Serwinowski (drums/vocals) and Masa Sasaki (bass) to round out the line up. Melissa Cross enlisted the production genius of Josh Wilbur (Lamb of God, Chiodos). To date, Sun & Flesh have dropped 2 EPs, 3 videos at Manuel’s multi-faceted directing and editing talent.
“The latest EP is heavy-emotional,” admits Christoph, “because it deals with letting go of being bitter, hurt and being excruciatingly lonely in a town full of lost souls. I didn’t realize that everyone else feels that way too. And it’s not really a job. More of a calling; to make the music as vital to our fans as it is to us.”
