Aleinikoff joined the law faculty after having served as the executive associate commissioner for programmes in the US Department of Justiceâ€™s Immigration and Naturalization Service and as general counsel in the Immigration and Naturalization Service. He has been on the faculty at the University of Michigan Law School. After receiving his law degree, he served as law receptionist to the Honorable Edward Weinfeld, US District Judge. He has published numerous articles and books, including Semblances of Sovereignty: The Constitution, the State, and American Citizenship (Harvard University Press, 2002) and, with Douglas Klusmeyer, Citizenship Policies for An Age of Migration: The Comparative Citizenship Project (Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, 2002).
