The Lower Caves make music that simultaneously refuses to follow a formula, yet is always immediately identifiable as their own. Aaron Ahlstrom's (vocals/guitar) distinct tenor delivery which ranges from melancholic introspection to almost-delirious aggression provides the touchstone; giving fellow bandmates Jonathan Williams (drums), Jon Shearer (guitar/keys), and Sean Savacool (bass) the ability to provide an exceptionally wide variety of creative musical backdrops. Those soundscapes move between ethereal and hard-hitting, from art-rock to edgy alternative.
The band has developed a loyal following in Nashville driven by enthusiastic word-of-mouth reviews of their live shows which combine their sophisticated and memorable song arrangements with an unmistakable love and energy for performing. This combination helped them win the Nashville 2011 Music City Mayhem Contest for best Nashville band, and open up for RIDE at the Shaky Knees Fest late night show.
Having already released a self-titled EP, their first full length album Past Palace and a "Wingwalker / Terrible Fantastic" 7 inch single, they've spent the past months in an East Nashville studio self producing their upcoming album. The sessions, financed entirely by their fans thru a successful Kickstarter campaign, show the band taking another large confident step forward musically. The long recording process has allowed the band to grow even closer as they've fleshed out new compositions by Ahlstrom while encountering some decidedly unintentional comic relief. The forthcoming album, christened Turquoise Blues, is an impressive collection of music that highlights both strong, diverse songwriting and each of the four members individual talents.
Early supporter WRLT / Nashville (award winning commercial Triple A radio station) has played multiple songs by the band with the track “Protecting God” receiving over 100 plays to date. Their songs have also been featured on various outlets including a Motorola on-line advertising campaign, MTVs Teen Mom, ABC Family Network series Jane By Design, The CW Network & Warner Bros One Tree Hill and the L.A. Complex television series. Red Bull recently invited the band to participate in the Red Bull Sound Select campaign, which will include a live show in Nashville in addition to exposure on the company's web platform to promote and develop local talent in key US cities.
